Lochnorris and New Cumnock primary schools were among five East Ayrshire facilities to earn their Music Education Partnership Group (MEPG) We Make Music digital school award.

The MEPG, an independent charity, is a network of music-based organisations with a Scottish focus, established to promote and celebrate the benefits of music education. 

Lochnorris and New Cumnock achieved the award alongside Hillhead Primary, Galston Primary and Gargieston Primary.

The charity recognises the transformative potential of music and believe that everyone in Scotland should benefit from learning more about making music.

Stuart Guffie from Sonappa, an online and blended learning resource, has been working with the schools for 18 months, supporting them to work towards earning their We Make Music – Digital Award.

He has led fun lessons, with staff from each school, helping the children and young people understand more about digital music making, from making original songs to understanding musical and technical fundamentals.

Councillor Elaine Cowan, spokesperson for lifelong learning, education and skills and culture said: “Music has the potential to transform life chances and as a council, we believe it is important that there is equity of access to music provision.

"Our music service is dedicated to ensuring that as many children and young people as possible have access to music education and were delighted to be part of the We Make Music digital award pilot.

"The schools have all really enjoyed and benefitted from the experience and I am delighted to offer my congratulations to everyone involved.”
