An Auchinleck man has challenged himself to a mammoth 150-mile weighted walk in July, all in aid of charity.

Bryan Gallacher has been taking on the Help for Heroes task for the month, as he looks to raise vital funds for a charity that he knows very well.

Amazingly, despite the challenge due to last for the whole month, Bryan has managed to clock up 150 miles already.

Bryan was in the army for 10 years. Around two years ago he lost his sister to suicide and that sent Bryan into a downward spiral for a while, where he was struggling with his own mental health issues.

Since then, Bryan has been working with the likes of Veterans First and East Ayrshire Recovery Hub, not only to help his own cause, but to share his experience with others in a similar situation.

Now he's tackled the 150 weighted walk to further support like himself, and those who have been through difficult times.

Bryan said: "I saw the 150 walk challenge on Facebook and I just jumped at the chance of getting involved in it.

"I'm in a group with hundreds of other people who are taking it on and it's amazing to see all these people come together for the same cause.

"I've been diagnosed with PTSD. I was an alcoholic for about two-and-a-half years, but I'm 182 days sober [at the time of writing], so I'm on the road to recovery."

Bryan's breakdown of the walks throughout the month was due to work out at around five miles per day.

To make the challenge even tougher, he's been doing it while carrying 50 pounds of weight in a rucksack.

He added: "Things like this are really helping me on my road to recovery and I know it's the same for a lot of people.

"If this challenge can help or inspire even one or two people the it will be worth it in the end.

"It's not as much about the money for me, it's about raising awareness that people can change their lifestyles and things can be done to help.

"It's been a struggle for me for a couple of years, but I finally feel like I've found the old me again.

"It's motivational for a lot people who have had a tough couple of years and need something to work towards, so I really hope people see it and see that there is help out there."

Bryan's walks have taken all through the beautiful areas of Ayrshire.

So far, he's managed to raise over £500 towards the total of helping people who have been in a situation much like his.

He's also vlogging his journey via his own YouTube channel.
