Drivers in East Ayrshire are being warned of a 25-mile diversion during a series of road closures in the area.

Part of the A70 is set to be closed in both directions for three weekends this month, to allow resurfacing work to take place.

The closure will be in place on Muirkirk Road in Lugar, for a distance of 800 metres from the Craigston Holm junction to the 'Lugar East Gateway'.

Closures are due to begin on Saturday, October 7 at 8am.

The road will be shut from 8am on Saturday until 8pm on the Sunday on the weekends of October 7/8, 15/16 and 21/22.

It's expected that the road will remain open outwith these times and emergency service access will not be affected.

Cumnock Chronicle: Diversion.

Works will involve removing sections of the existing road surface, deep patching, laying a base course, adjusting ironware, laying a new surface course and renewing the associated road markings.

A 25-mile diversion will be in place via A70 Eastwards to B743 Sorn to A76 Mauchline, A76 to A70 Dettingen Roundabout Cumnock, continuing on A70 to Lugar and vice versa.

Further preparatory work will be undertaken on weekdays with Convoy Traffic Management in place and delays are possible.

Electronic Variable Message Signs will be placed on the A70 to inform the travelling public of each weekend road closure, and emergency access will be maintained at all times throughout the duration of the works.

Bus services will also be hit as a reduced timetable  will be in operation between Cumnock and Muirkirk during the weekend road closure times.
