Objectors have cited traffic safety issues as the reason for standing against plans for 29 new homes in Sorn.

Plans were submitted to East Ayrshire Council by LMA Architects, on behalf of Campbell Homes, to build the new development.

Some 29 homes have been planned for Catrine Road in the village, along the B713 road - with this road being the site's main road access.

The application could see Sorn's population increase by at least a third.

Plans include potential for six five-bedroom houses, 15 four-bedroom houses and eight three-bedroom houses.

So far, nine objections have been raised, mostly citing road safety concerns regarding the plans.

Others are pointing at the already empty housing estate in Sorn's Woolmill Place, with 12 empty properties at the site.

One objector said: "This [road issues] is an existing concern that will be exacerbated due to the increased number of vehicles over a prolonged period in laying the foundations, building the houses and then fitting out 29 new houses ready for the market, followed by the increased number of vehicles belonging to the occupants and from other vehicles."

Adding a further objection, Mrs Joanna Korn added: "Is there a need for so many houses in a small village already with unfinished, unoccupied houses that have been empty for 13 years?

"Who's to say this will not happen again?

"Is there demand for another housing estate, especially with another planned in Mauchline recently?

"Traffic in the village would increase dramatically, 29 houses will equal at least two cars per house.

"Local residents on the road already have to contend with large lorries travelling fast down the road for local quarry currently."

Another objector added: "For over 10 years we have lived across from approximately 14 empty homes - increasingly a blight on the landscape as they started to dilapidate - with various fencing and unfinished, unkept grounds.

"Whilst the new endeavour may be very worthy - I would certainly object to any new housing plans in Sorn from a planning perspective, whilst the homes at Woolmill Place remain unoccupied and unkept.

"Please put whatever process is necessary in place to fix these, before any further development is considered."

A design statement attached to the proposals adds: "The site was previously owned by Hope Homes before being purchased by Campbell Homes in 2021.

"Hope Homes previously sold off a portion of the site on the east boundary of the site which is excluded from the application, however, it is anticipated that this portion of land will remain green open space, albeit, out with the ownership of Campbell Homes."

The expiry date for the plans is Saturday, August 19, with comments available until then.
