An Ochiltree care service has been given areas for improvement following an "adequate" report.

The Care Inspectorate recently released a report on Spark of Genius' Netherton Complex just outside of Ochiltree.

The report covered an unannounced visit that took place at the centre in May.

Netherton is provided by Spark of Genius Ltd and is registered to provide school care accommodation to a maximum of six young people aged between 10 and 18 years of age.

Five of the young people are accommodated within the main house and one young person is in an adjacent small single cottage.

As part of the visit, inspectors spoke with people using the services, as well as a number of staff members and management.

The report found that the service had undergone a change in service manager, and staff informed inspectors of an improving situation more recently within the service.

The report said: "The service had undergone a change in management since the previous inspection.

"Staff inform us of some disruption leading up to and during this transition.

"This situation had caused some delay in addressing previous requirements and areas for improvement and these have been continued where appropriate."

It was also found that young people's views of the relationships with staff were inconsistent, but that staff were working hard to develop positive relationships.

It added: "It was clear that some young people had very good relationships with staff members and that the staff worked hard to attempt to maintain these.

"This was not providing a consistently positive environment however, as some young people presented very challenging behaviour which impacted on the feelings of safety of other young people and on staff.

"Some young people felt that staff were not always respectful to them."

Gaps and contradictions were found in document recording, according to the Care Insperctorate.

Overall, the report graded the service a '3- adequate' score out of a possible score of six.

The service was set requirements by the Care Inspectorate, whcih should be carried out by August 31, 2023.

These included improving the quality of admissions assessments for children and young people, and improving the completion of service documentation and develop robust auditing of these recordings to support improved planning and interventions for young people.
