A CHURCH congregation in New Cumnock has defended its opposition to same-sex marriage - after its position on the issue was branded "an abomination".

The Chronicle was contacted by a member of the public who expressed concern after learning that the 'company of Christians' at the Gospel Hall in New Cumnock are against the idea of same-sex marriage.

The individual, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the group's ideology meant that they "don't agree with equality" and said the stance was an "abomination".

A member of the Gospel Hall congregation told the Chronicle that they are an independent company of "born-again Christians" who are "guided and governed by the teachings of the Bible".

Dr J. Stewart Gillespie, speaking on behalf of the group, said same-sex relationships belonged to the same 'prohibited degrees' in Biblical teachings as sexual relations with close family members and animals.

He said people with "alternative lifestyles" were welcome to attend the group's weekly worship every Sunday - and suggested that the concern raised with the Chronicle was "vexatious".

Dr Gillespie said: "Our view of human sexual relationships thus reflect the Biblical teachings in this area, namely that sexual relationships are restricted by God to the Biblical covenant of marriage as established by Him in creation and as evident in biology - that is, between one man and one woman for life.

"Relationships of a sexual nature are also excluded within Biblical 'prohibited degrees' e.g. close family members, parents and children, same sex relationships and with animals.

"As Bible-believing Christians we would not endorse any of these practices.

"Clearly the disgruntlement you mention is somewhat vexatious as I am sure the individual you mention has little interest in practising a lifestyle in conformity to the Bible.

"We have certainly not had anyone recently with this lifestyle approach us for help in their spiritual journey."

The response adds: "The fact that we do not practice nor endorse certain lifestyles e.g. sex before marriage, divorce, adultery or same sex relationships, clearly does not mean that we do not believe in equality.

"It is precisely because we believe that all men and women are created in the image of God with souls equally as precious that we extend an invitation to all to our Gospel service each Sunday at 3pm, to hear about a Saviour who died for all, who is able to save all and who ultimately will judge all.

"PS: if there is a man genuinely interested in seeking God he'd be most welcome to come along at 3pm each Sunday. Many do, including those with alternative lifestyles who were all made very welcome."
