Roadworks in Sanquhar due to take place next week have been rearranged in an effort to reduce the disruption to drivers.

Originally plans were in place for various closure, including full closures during the night, between November 28 and December 4.

However, now the works have been split into four phases, taking the total spent on the roads over the past few months to more than £1.5 million.

Despite aiming to minimise disruption, a 70-mile diversion will still be in place during points of the works.

Work will still take place from Monday, November 28 until Sunday, December 4, 2022. 

Half-a-million pounds worth of work is also taking place on the road. As is a scheme worth £737,411.

The latest £266,000 of works will start next week.

PHASE ONE: Monday, November 28 to Thursday, December 1: Closure of the A76 from Sanquhar Industrial Estate to Blackaddie Road between 7pm and 6am each night.

There will also be temporary traffic lights in place between 6am and 7pm on Tuesday, November 29 and Wednesday, November 30 to facilitate cooling of surfacing treatment.

Traffic management for phase one will be removed by 6am on Friday, December 2.

PHASE TWO: 7pm on Friday, December 2 to 6am Saturday, December 3: Night-time convoy working at Newark Farm.

PHASE THREE: Saturday, December 3 from 7am-6pm: Closure of the A76 between Eliock Bridge and Deer Park Avenue.

The A76 junctions with Howies Road and Renwick Place will be closed during the daytime works.

Access to Deer Park Avenue will be maintained from the north, with temporary lights between Leven Road and Deer Park Avenue. Footpaths on the northbound and southbound sides of the A76 will remain open.

Residents of properties on Castle Street and the A76 south of Deer Park Avenue will have restricted access from the south.

PHASE FOUR: Sunday, December 4 from 7am-6pm: Closure of the A76 between St Mary’s Street and Deer Park Avenue.

The A76 junctions with Cameron Place, Leven Road and Harvey’s Wynd will be closed during the daytime works.

Access to Deer Park Avenue will be maintained from the south, with temporary lights between Deer Park Avenue and Renwick Place.

Footpaths on the northbound and southbound sides of the A76 will remain open. Residents of properties on Castle Street, High Street and Cameron Place will have restricted access from the north.

On-street parking between the Tollbooth and Castleview Garage will be suspended for phases two, three and four.

The signed 70-mile diversion will reamin in place during sections of the work as follows: 

  • Northbound traffic will leave the A76 and turn right on to the C133N Holestane Road near Drumlanrig Castle, then turn left on to the A702 north of Carronbridge and continue north to the Abington Services roundabout where it will join the B7078. Traffic will then continue to Millbank and turn left on to the A70 Ayr Road east to Cumnock to re-join the A76 at Dettingen roundabout. 
  • Southbound traffic will travel north through New Cumnock and take the exit at Dettingen Roundabout on to the A70 through Cumnock to the B7078 and then proceed to Abington Services, before taking the A702 south to Carronbridge. Traffic wishing to head north on the A76 will be directed south to Thornhill roundabout where they will be able to turn and travel north.
