The area’s big three got themselves off to a fantastic start in the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division.

Glenafton Athletic, Cumnock Juniors and Auchinleck Talbot were all dealt away fixtures to open their league accounts this year and with nine points up for grabs a total of seven points were amassed in what proved to be a great opening weekend for East Ayrshire.

Cumnock Juniors arguably emerged with the best result of the three as they took a trip to last season’s champions Darvel and emerged from Recreation Park with a 2-1 win getting their season off to a fantastic start as well as dealing a blow to Darvel’s title defence.

Last year’s runners-up and Scottish Junior Cup winners Auchinleck Talbot got their quest for league glory off to a flying start as well despite starting their pre-season schedule off late.

Some were worried that the Talbot’s late start to pre-season friendlies would see them underprepared or even fatigued trying to fit multiple matches in a short space of time but Tommy Sloan’s men showed no such signs as they came away from a trip to Troon with a 2-1 victory.

Troon started quickly in what was an end-to-end first-half with Talbot keeper Andy Leishman denying Troon striker Kyle Gilroy on a few occasions early on.

Talbot took the lead though through Ross Taylor as a corner broke to him and he smashed home from 15 yards out.

A spectacular volley from Gilroy brought Troon back on level terms before Graham Wilson tapped home the eventual winner with 61 minutes on the clock.

The only one of the three that didn’t emerge with a win was Glenafton Athletic however the Glens avoided defeat with a 1-1 draw with Largs Thistle.

The goal for Glens came from Summer arrival from Drumchapel, defender Michael McMullin and they will be looking to pick up their first win when they welcome Arthurlie to Loch Park.

This weekend Auchinleck welcome last year’s champions Darvel to Beechwood Park, whilst Cumnock Juniors entertain Cambuslang Rangers.
