A tough test awaits Auchinleck Talbot in the second round of the Scottish Cup after they were drawn to face Cove Rangers at Balmoral Stadium.

Goals from Jamie Glasgow and Stephen Wilson helped Talbot to a 2-1 win against Wick Academy in the first round on Saturday.

Talbot boss Tommy Sloan was optimistic after the draw but he knows just how tough the task facing his side is.

Sloan told the Chronicle: "It's a game to look forward to. Cove are top of the Highland League and unbeaten so far so its going to be a good test for us.

"Travelling up north again isn't ideal and it's a plastic pitch but we are really looking forward to it.

"I don't know where they rank among the teams we've played in the senior Scottish Cup. They've had some good results and they got quite far in the competition last season.

"They have ex-senior players in their team but it's a good game for us to look forward to."

Highland League leaders Cove enter the competition in the second round after wining the division last season and just missing out on promotion to League Two in the play-offs.

Cove have only lost seven of their last 111 league matches – a stretch which includes a mammoth 45-game unbeaten run from January 2017 to May 2018.

However, Talbot are unbeaten against Highland League opposition with five wins and one draw in their six meetings - scoring 21 times in the process.
