AUCHINLECK TALBOT are now just three points from reclaiming the Super League Premier Division title after beating 10-man Girvan on Wednesday night.
For a while, it looked like the game would finish goalless at Beechwood Park but three late goals saw Talbot move top of the table with two games remaining.
Sean McIlroy bagged the opener after Talbot had two goals ruled out for offside. Stevie O'Donnell was then sent off after saving Graham Wilson's strike and Gordon Pope bagged a brace of penalties.
After the match, Talbot gaffer Tommy Sloan said: "It wasn't a great start. Right from the kick-off, I didn't think we were at it and you saw Girvan were right up for it.
"We finally got there with a knock in from a yard. I thought we had a good goal early on chalked off, they've give offside but I'm not convinced. Last 20 minutes we were strong and we got what we deserved.
"We've got to try and beat Pollok now on Saturday. If we can win on Saturday we get it [the league title]. You see we've not got a load of players.
"We've got ourselves in a good position, we need to win one of two games but it couldn't be much tougher, Pollok or Cumnock."
In the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup, CUMNOCK fell 3-1 at home to Kilbirnie Ladeside in the quarter-finals.
Sub Jamie Hilton scored for Cumnock with his first touch of the ball to level the scores on the hour mark but the Blasties rallied and will now face Largs Thistle in the semi-finals.
On Monday night, goals from Sean McIlroy and Mark Shankland helped Talbot to a 2-1 win over GLENAFTON ATHLETIC and MUIRKIRK ended their Ayrshire District League campaign on a high with a 1-0 win over Ardeer Thistle.
