NEW Muirkirk boss Kevin Muirhead is looking to build for the future as he gets set to revamp the playing squad and the clubs fortunes.

Muirkirk sit second bottom of the Ayrshire District League with just three points from their four games after former boss George Grierson quit to join basement boys Saltcoats Victoria.

Kirk’s only victory so far this season came against Saltcoats – a 4-0 win in their most recent fixture.

Muirhead will take charge of his first match when Muirkirk take on Ardrossan Winton Rovers in the league on Saturday after their game against Irvine Victoria on October 7 was postponed.

But the new manager insists he isn’t targetting anything more than a stronger squad for next season.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Muirhead said: “The goals for this season are to settle the squad and create a competitive squad. I have spoken to the committee and, this late on in the season, it’s about building for next season.

“If you were speaking to me in June then we’d be hoping to kick on and finish as high in the league as we could. I want to build a solid team and build on that. Hopefully we can pick up a few points between now and the end of the season.

“We’ve been assessing the squad, there are a lot players on their way out and we have had plenty of trialists in. Unfortunately we haven’t managed to get a friendly arranged before the Ardrossan game so it will be a bit hit and miss.

“It’s all about rebuilding the team this season. We have got more resources than I have had previously so we are able to target players that I have had my eye on but not been able to get elsewhere. Things are looking good. We have 22 players in training tonight and will whittle it down from there.”
