MAUCHLINE badminton sensation Holly Newall warmed up for this week’s Scottish Open Grand Prix by winning the women’s singles title at the Czech Junior Championships in Orlova-Lutyne.
The 18-year-old defeated Polish second seed Wiktoria Dabczynska (23-21, 21-15) in the semi-finals and then took the title by beating Czech player Bara Hadackova (21-11, 21-19).
The title triumph is the perfect boost for Newall as she prepared for the Scottish Open on Wednesday where she needed two wins in the women’s singles qualifying to reach the main draw.
Scotland also collected a gold and silver in the mixed doubles in Prague.
Newall and Toni Woods fell one win short of a bronze medal when they were beaten in the quarter-final of the women’s doubles by Polish fourth seeds Wiktoria Adamek and Izabela Pajek (21-7, 10-21, 22-20).
