KILMARNOCK and Loudoun MP Lillian Jones has welcomed the Prime Minister's call for more powers to be devolved to Scotland's regions and communities.

Responding to a speech by Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Lanarkshire, the Labour MP said local people are often best placed to shape the future of their towns and communities.

Ms Jones said devolution should not simply involve transferring powers between governments.

She said: “Devolution should mean more than transferring power from one parliament to another.

"It should give communities a real say in their future, backed by the resources and powers to deliver meaningful change.”

The MP also welcomed a proposed partnership between the UK and Scottish Governments on regional economic development, arguing it could help communities shape regeneration projects, attract investment and create jobs.

She added: “For Kilmarnock and Loudoun, that means making sure our towns and communities can shape regeneration, attract investment and make the most of their local assets.

“We need a partnership that recognises the potential of every part of Scotland, not just our biggest cities.”

The Labour MP said she hoped both governments would work together to bring decision-making closer to local people and strengthen opportunities for communities across Scotland.
