This week, we take a look back at the events during the long hot summer of 2004 in the Cumnock and Doon Valley area.

Muirkirk’s Nursery Class of 2004 tossed their hats into the air in celebration after a stirring ceremony. Local parents were treated to a variety of songs in French and English during the graduation ceremony held at the nursery in August that year.

Dalmellington’s Craigengillan Estate was invaded by Russian soldiers in August 2004. Well, almost: a Channel 5 two-part documentary on the Russian Revolution was being filmed at the restored estate.

Steppin’ Out Dancers, taught by Libby Graham, held their 2004 show ‘A World of Dance’ in Cumnock Town Hall.

Meanwhile, the local Carrie Paterson Unit One Dance School took part in the Scottish Solo Star and Super Team Grand Finals with their under 16 group winning their section as well as the title Beginner Superteam for 2004.

Sorn Village Hall celebrated 50 years in August 2004 with a special exhibition. Community Council chair Heather Young and Sorn Milk’s Davie Shaw, secretary and planning adviser, are pictured looking over one of the displays.
