One of Cumnock's busiest streets has been earmarked for speed-calming measures by East Ayrshire Council.

The work forms part of a package of road improvements across East Ayrshire worth £8.28 million, agreed by members of the local authority's cabinet.

The programme includes £2.293m for carriageway structural maintenance, £250,000 for pavement structural maintenance, another £250,000 for street lighting improvements.

In addition £323,000 will be spent on transport projects, including traffic calming measures.

However, the biggest single chunk of spending is a total of £2.4m to be spent on bridge and culvert strengthening.

Among the roads set to see traffic calming measures introduced is Glaisnock Street in the centre of Cumnock, where £20,000 has been set aside for work aimed at reducing vehicles' speed.

However, a document listing the planned works does not describe what the traffic calming in Glaisnock Street will involve, or when the work will be carried out.

Elsewhere, £5,000 is to be spent in Auchinleck, and another £5,000 in Mauchline, on a review of existing parking restrictions and the promotion of traffic regulation orders (TROs).

TROs are enforcement measures on speed limits, locations of parking and the management of traffic flow.

A further £20,000 will be spent on speed humps and promoting TROs on the A713 in Dalmellington.

And another £20,000 will be spent on improving pedestrian safety by installing bollards on Catrine's St Germain Street.
