Strongmen and women from a gym in Cumnock are set to represent the area on the British stage following success at a local event.

Members of The Unit in the town's Thistle Business Park recently competed in the Natural Strongman Federation Scotland event, held in Cumnock over the past weekend.

Upwards of 50 heavy lifters competed from all corners of Scotland, with six members of the Cumnock gym set to represent the gym - and Cumnock - at the British event in June.

Cumnock Chronicle:

Being held on June 22 and 23, Britain's Natural Strongman Federation is being held by The Unit and hosted at The Boolers in Drongan - where over 100 competitors from across Britain will face off.

Douglas Black, who opened the gym back in October 2020, has seen the gym grow to now having over 70 members, and he said it's great to see so many people taking to it and being pushed out of their comfort zone.

Douglas said: "Since it opened it's really grown arms and legs and it's great to see them pushing each other and being out of their comfort zone and then competing in novice competitions and then onto a national competition and then six going Brits (Britain's Natural Strongman Federation) is awesome an a bit surreal.

Cumnock Chronicle:

"The majority of them taking part have been doing it for a maximum of 18 months.

"The sport requires so much application and you really need to be focused on your training and goals to be able to compete.

"You're all in, or nothing. It's so good to see them achieving what they have because it's all totally worth it and it should be a great even in June as well."
