A New Cumnock man headbutted his partner and grabbed a child by the neck during an altercation over going to the pub.

Aaron Telfer, 30, of Burnton Place, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault following the incident on November 26 last year.

The procurator fiscal depute told Ayr Sheriff Court that Telfer and the woman had been in a relationship for ten years.

At around 5pm on November 26, the pair returned home, and had planned to go to the pub, but were unable to do so.

At around 6pm, the pair got into an argument after Telfer said he would go to the pub by himself - sparking Telfer's violent assault.

He handed himself into Kilmarnock police office two days later and was arrested and charged.

Telfer's defence solicitor told the court that the woman had been growing "increasingly concerned" about his client's level of drinking.

Telfer was handed an 18 month supervised community payback order, and told to engage with alcohol addiction services.
