A former pupil of the Robert Burns Academy in Cumnock has been named as one of three new Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) for East Ayrshire.

David McGilp will represent Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley.    

Lucy MacKinnon and Morgan McPherson, both pupils from Kilmarnock Academy, will represent the Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley constituency.

The election announcement was made at East Ayrshire Council's chambers by presiding officer Kevin Wells, EAC's strategic lead for communities.

The new MSYPs will be supported during the next two years by support worker Heather McCormick, who is the team coordinator for the Young People, Sport and Diversion team.

Councillor Elaine Cowan, EAC's spokesperson for children and young people, said: “The successful candidates are a testament to the high calibre of talent and dedication that we have seen throughout this process.

"We extend our congratulations to all applicants for the interest, hard work and enthusiasm they have shown during the election period.  

“Our new MSYPs will no doubt make an incredible contribution to our work with children and young people throughout East Ayrshire and as such, will become valuable members of the East Ayrshire Children and Young People’s Cabinet.
