Plans are being assessed to demolish a building near the site of the old Cumnock Academy.

The old 'janitor's house' next to the Riverside Centre on Ayr Road has been empty since the old Cumnock Academy building was demolished.

The school closed for the final time in October 2020, when pupils made the transition to the new Robert Burns Academy nearby.

The Cumnock Academy building was demolished soon afterwards to make way for a car park and playing fields for the new campus.

East Ayrshire Council says the empty and increasingly run down building is now surplus to its requirements.

An application to have the house and garage demolished has been lodged by the council, with the authority's own planning department.

A statement accompanying the demolition application said: "All demolition [is] to be carried out in accordance with the Health & Safety Act (1974) by a bona fide contractor experienced in this type of work, under the direct supervision of East Ayrshire Council officers.

"On demolition of the structures, the excess demolition material will be removed immediately from the site."

The application also says a survey will be carried out before work begins to find out whether any asbestos or other 'notifiable waste' is present on the site - and that when work is completed, all plant and materials will be removed and the site left in a "neat and tidy" condition.

The appointed contractor will also make good any damage to roads and footpaths caused during the work, and will also be required to grass the area to the council's satisfaction.
