Drivers in East Ayrshire are being warned of a 25-mile diversion during a series of road closures in the area.

Part of the A70 is set to be closed in both directions for three weekends in October, to allow resurfacing work to take place.

It's the second set of weekend closures on the A70 to be announced in recent weeks.

The latest closure will be in place on Muirkirk Road in Lugar, for a distance of 800 metres from the Craigston Holm junction to the 'Lugar East Gateway'.

Closures are due to begin on Saturday, October 7 at 8am.

The road will be shut from 8am on Saturday until 8pm on the Sunday on the weekends of October 7/8, 15/16 and 21/22.

It's expected that the road will remain open outwith these times and emergency service access will not be affected.

During working hours, residents within the affected area will be permitted access when safe to do so and when directed by a traffic marshal, but delays may be possible.

A 25-mile diversion is in place along the B743 via Sorn to Mauchline and then the A70 before re-joining the A70 at Cumnock and vice versa in both directions.

Drivers will be hoping to avoid similar chaos to a road closure along the A70 towards Muirkirk back in July, when residents said they had been completely cut off due to a road closure.

Ballochmyle councillor, Linda Holland said at the time that she'd "do everything in her power" to stop something similar from happening again.

A separate stretch of the A70, at the Burnock Bridge in Ochiltree, will be closed for resurfacing works on the weekends of September 16-17, September 23-24, September 30-October 1, and October 7-8, with diversions via the Barony Road, Auchinleck and the A76.
