IT was the end of an era at a Cumnock-based housing association this week as a stalwart of one of its key community services put down his toolbox for the last time.

Charlie Murphy set up the Care and Repair service at Shire Housing Association 20 years ago - but reached the end of his working life and the start of his retirement on Thursday, August 21.

Announcing Charlie's retirement on social media a Shire spokesperson said: "He has helped countless people across East Ayrshire stay safe at home.

"Charlie truly is one of our great people. As well as delivering a fantastic service to the community he keeps us all well fed and entertained.

"We will miss you Charlie, and wish you a long and happy retirement."

The Care and Repair service offers advice and assistance to home owners and some private tenants who are aged over 60 or registered disabled, carrying out small repairs and adaptations to properties to help people live in comfort in their own homes for longer.

It can also organise for surveys, drawings and estimates where required and can organise home safety security measures.
