The owner of a new Mauchline café said he thought "why not" when taking the plunge into the new business venture.

David Welsh took over the Crafty Coffee shop in the town's Loudoun Street earlier this week.

Although David has had to deal with some issues, he's looking forward to becoming a regular part of Mauchline.

After the closure and planned closures of a number of businesses in the town, David, originally from Catrine, said it's something he thought he just had to jump into.

His husband, Alisdair, helped him along the way

"I've worked in care basically since I left school," David said.

"I saw the café was up for rent from the previous owners, then my husband asked if we could go and view the café.

"I was wanting to take a café on years ago, but I didn't think it was the right thing and I thought it was a bit of a dying business, but it doesn't look that way now.

"Now that this came back up again, I just thought 'why not?', let's give it a try."

After opening the doors to the new café on Monday, David said his first few days were chock-a-block.

Although there have been some electrical issues, David is keen to get back to his baking.

He added: "I just want to get back to baking and getting the café back up and running properly.

"I've seen a lot business closing for one reason or another in the town, so it's great to be able to open something and do something more positive.

"The café had a lot of elderly clientele previously who would come in for their coffee mornings and have a wee blether with their pals, so they've told me already that they're looking forward to coming back in and having somewhere to go again.

"I'm really looking forward to see what's to come".
