THIS week we're flashing back to what made the headlines in the Cumnock Chronicle in May, 2003.

Cumnock Chronicle: Kilmarnock stars visit Patna Primary

KILMARNOCK footballers turned up at Patna Primary School to show the breakfast club the benefits of a healthy diet.

The breakfast club was set up as part of a pilot in Littlemill, Bellsbank and Patna through the Doon Learning Partnership and focuses on giving young people a healthy start to the day.

The Partnership believe that young people’s concentration is heightened after a healthy mean and to prove it the club has been set up for seven weeks.

And just to prove the benefits, Kilmarnock footballers Gary McDonald and Colin Stewart dropped in to sign autographs and chat to the young people.

Cumnock Chronicle: Logan Primary's work was hailed by police officers

Logan Primary was hailed as Cumnock and Doon Valley’s school of the month by local police officers.

The award issued by Cumnock station recognises the efforts of school in reducing vandalism and promoting positive alternatives.

And for the month of March, Logan's work in raising money to fund playground games and better their school environment made them a clear choice for the award. Representatives from each class and head teacher Lesley Brown (centre) accept the award presented by PC Derek Simpson and Inspector Jim Thomson.

Also in the picture are Alex Torrance, Chair of School Board, and Ronnie Hamilton from Logan Community Council.

Local primary school kids were taking part in special fun fitness classes as part of an Active Primary School Project.

The three year development was funded by both SportScotland and East Ayrshire Council aiming to increase the opportunities for safe and fun, physical activity.

Angela Murrary, co-ordinator in the Cumnock area, said: “The pupils had an absolutely great time and I think they’ll be doing it again.”

The lucky schools taking part were Barshare Primary, Hillside School, Cairnhill Primary, Logan Primary, Castle Primary, Netherthird Primary and Greenmill Primary.

Fitness instructor Sharon McQuillan is pictured teaching the Barshare pupils the art of putting your leg in the air.

And finally, a heroic Stagecoach driver averted disaster by evacuating passengers when his bus caught fire in Auchinleck.

Gary McPhee kept cool after a quick-thinking road user pulled up in front of the bus to alert him of the danger. As the passengers rushed to safety the inside of the vehicle was engulfed by smoke.

It appeared the fire started on the underside and the bus was destroyed by both the smoke and flames.

Now Mr McPhee, driving the Ayr to Cumnock route, is in line for a commendation from Stagecoach for his reflex reactions which saved lives.

The driver said: “I was driving through Auchinleck when a car pulled in front of me. I thought they were parking so I pulled out, but they waved me down to tell me there was a fire underneath.

“People then started to say they could smell something funny, and by the time the second last person was off the bus I couldn’t see the third seat along for the smoke.

“It could have been a lot worse and somebody could have been killed.”
