Cumnock's 2022 Citizen of the Year got her hands on the official prize at a presentation event recently.

Marge Paterson was announced as the recipient of the 2022 edition of the award back in February.

Thanks to her tireless years of volunteering and helping throughout the community over almost three decades, Marge was handed the prize alongside 2021 winner, Tony Esquierdo.

Colin Chisholm, chairman of the Keir McTurk Memorial Committee, which considers nominations for the prize, was also present to hand over the award to Marge.

The committee decided that Marge should be recognised for her amazing attitude.

Many local residents will recognise Marge from the town's Words of Wisdom café and book shop in the Square, where she's been a weel kent face since 1995.

Speaking to the Chronicle when she was announced as the winner, Marge played down her impact on so many people.

Se said: "Your immediate reaction when you win is 'why me?', because there are loads of good people who do so much around the area.

"Words of Wisdom is somewhere that a lot of people think it's just for people who go to church - and that's far from the truth.

"It took us a wee while after Covid for people to feel comfortable about coming out again, but I think we're getting back to that again, which is great.

"I'm very grateful that his been recognised and people do recognise it, and it is a proud moment."
