A scout leader from New Cumnock says it's great to see the group open to so many people, as he looks back on 60 years of service.

Iain Burgoyne is currently the Scout Leader at the 46th Ayrshire scout group in New Cumnock.

Having joined the group at eight-years-old, initially as a cub, Iain has been involed in some capacity ever since.

Iain's great-grandfather initially started the group back in 1910, and it's been in the family since then.

Through the years, Iain has seem many changes in the group. Most notably, the introduction of girls being able to join the group in 1986.

"It was strange when we initially started having girls joining the group, but it's one of the best things we've ever done," Iain said.

"There are no Guides or Brownies for them in New Cumnock now, so there's a lot of interest in them joining the group".

Iain recently celebrated his 68th birthday, meaning he's been part of the group for six decades.

He's proud of how it becomes a family occasion for many people, and how it educates people from being able to join the Beavers at age six, moving up through the Cubs, the Scouts and the Explorers until they're 18.

Iain added: "It's great when you know that kids are joining and maybe their mum and dad or granny and grandpa have been part of the group already.

"People come from all over and they can be involved form they're six, right up until they're 18 and then they can become group leaders as well.

"It's very much based on being outdoors and adventures outdoors. They all love it.

"It's amazing to have been involved for this long, and I hope the group can continue for a good while yet."

The group runs through various fundraising efforts including sponsored walks, breakfast mornings in their hall, car washes, and some voluntary grants.

Iain's commitment has seen him pick up various accolades during the years, including outstanding service awards, and being invited to Holyrood Palace for the Queen's Jubilee garden party.

The group is always looking for newcomers at their meetings at their Scout Hall on Millar Road.
