Bird boxes made by primary pupils in Catrine have been targeted by vandals, according to social media posts.

The Catrine Community Action Plan (CCAP) group says it received word from the head teacher at Catrine Primary School saying that the creations had been damaged and removed.

The bird boxes are situated along part of the River Ayr walk - and it's thought a group of youngsters from the area may be responsible.

It comes just weeks after the Catrine Early Childhood Centre's new outdoor area was also the target of vandalism.

Now it seems like it's the turn of the primary school's pupils to bear the brunt of this behaviour.

The message from the school's head teacher said: "One of our teachers was up the River Ayr walk with her family to check out the bird boxes that the school made.

"Unfortunately all the boxes are now gone.

"They've all been taken down and are missing.

"[We're] Absolutely gutted as I know the hard work and efforts that into both building and placing them."

The CCAP suggested that more should be done for the youngsters in the village, so they don't resort to vandalism like this.

A group spokesperson said: "As a village and as the adults we all need to pull together and try and get this stopped.

"As well as reporting this behaviour to their parents we really need to think about getting some activities put in place for our young teenagers and a bit more interaction instead of papping them out and leaving it to other people to make sure they are all safe and not wrecking the village.

"CCAP Group have been trying to get the community centre back to start youth clubs and more teenage activities but that's not looking very hopeful, we are trying, but we need the whole village to help.

"We need ideas from the parents, volunteers and help from the powers that be to be able to do something positive."

Staff at Catrine ECC arrived at work on March 20 to discover that parts of the facility's outdoor play area had been vandalised, with offensive language written on one structure at the site and equipment pulled out of the play shed and scattered around the garden.
