A Cumnock beautician is making it her mission to boost the number of women signing up for smear tests.

Carolyn Crawford, owner of Glam Beauty & Aesthetics by Carolyn in Cumnock, is adding an extra incentive into the fight to drive up smear test numbers.

Figures show that as many as one in three women still don't take up their screening invite.

To try and combat this, Carolyn is offering women a free 30-minute facial if they book to have a smear test done between now and the end of March.

It's something Carolyn has done before and she was keen to bring it back after coronavirus restrictions eased again.

Carolyn said: "I haven't done this for a couple of years now due to covid, but it's back.

"Smear tests are still at a record low level.

"Smear tests are there to detect the early signs of cervical cancer, the earlier you catch cancer the more likely you’ll make a better recovery.

"It’s a bit awkward, but it’s vital to our female health.

"Go and get your smear test done between now and the end of March and I will give you a voucher for a totally free 30-minute facial.

"I don’t care if I end up doing a 100 of these, if it means 100 woman go for their smear it will be worth every hour and penny.

"All you have to do to claim your voucher for your free facial is send me proof. This can be anything. A text from your doctors, a letter from the clinic, or a selfie with the nurse.

"I will send you your voucher or get you booked in".

Lynne McNiven, Director of Public Health at NHS Ayrshire & Arran said: “Going for your smear test is the best way to protect yourself against cervical cancer, so I’d encourage those eligible to attend when invited. The test checks for HPV and cell changes, helping identify those who are at higher risk of cervical cancer.

“We’re keen to reassure those who may put off going for their smear that those who carry out the tests are trained to make you feel as comfortable as possible at the appointment.

"I’d encourage anyone worried to talk to your GP or nurse so they can give you the right support and help make the appointment better for you.”
