AN ORGANIC farm's partnership with East Ayrshire Council saved almost two million pieces of single-use plastic going to landfill last year.

Mauchline's Mossiel Organic Farm teamed up with the local authority back in 2021, to provide every school in East Ayrshire with their organic milk.

In that time, they have managed to wipe out 1.9 million pieces of single-use plastic lbetween August 2021- December 2022.

That has helped towards the farm's incredible tally of 15 million fewer pieces of non-recyclable plastic materials in the area since they ditched plast completely in 2019.

The milk is delivered to schools using reusable containers that are then returned to the farm was washing and getting them ready for the next trip.

Provost Jim Todd paid farmer Bryce Cunningham a visit at Mossgiel, to see how the great work is achieved.

Commenting on the visit and the great work, Provost Todd said: "The milk is delivered in 100 per cent reusable five-litre containers which are returned to the farm for washing and refilling on a weekly basis.

"From August 2021 to December 2022, East Ayrshire Schools have saved over 1.9million pieces of single-use plastic from going to landfill. That’s the equivalent of stacking 250ml bottles on top of each other the height of Ben Nevis 54 times.

"Mossgiel deliver the milk in electric vans which are now powered by newly installed solar panels - and they installed a biomass boiler in 2021 to heat the water whilst also using heat recovery systems, further reducing their carbon footprint.

"Farmer Bryce has set their goal of being carbon neutral by December 2025."
