The world’s oldest working post office has celebrated its 311th birthday.

Sanquhar Post Office is believed to have opened on February 5, 1712.

Recognised by Guinness World Records, the Post Office has featured on news shows in the likes of America and Australia, due to its incredible history.

There were some concerns for its future back in 2020, when it was put up for sale.

The Alam family stepped in to save the shop in 2015, before looking to sell up themselves in 2020.

Sanquhar Post Office remains on the market, but there has been some interest in the building recenty.

Remaining as a popular tourist attraction, people often stop in Sanquhar to see it, and the locals are forever proud of the history that the post office brings to the village.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Sanquhar Post Office is the world’s oldest working post office and we are very proud of its long heritage.

"There have been 16 owners since it opened in 1712. The Alam family has operated Sanquhar branch since 2015.

"Sanquhar Post Office is up for sale and interest has been expressed by retailers who want to run this historic branch.”
