PUPILS at Mauchline Primary School had a special treat on Wednesday when East Ayrshire's new school mascot joined in their Burns Day celebrations.

The school, which is just a stone's-throw from the house where Robert Burns and Jean Armour began married life and the famous Poosie Nansie's inn, held a Burns poetry competition - and the school’s catering services team had a traditional Burns supper ready for the children and young people to enjoy at lunch.

Super Tattie was selected as the council’s new school meal mascot after being created by Dalmellington Primary pupil Carson Bryce.

Catering services will be running special themed days throughout this year in all primary schools and early childhood centres with Pancake Day celebrations coming up next on Tuesday, February 21.

Proud of their links to Burns, pupils were delighted with the chance to celebrate on of Scotland's most famous figures.

Councillor Elaine Cowan, East Ayrshire Council's spokesperson for lifelong learning, education and skills and culture said: "It was great that Super Tattie was able to join Mauchline Primary for their Burns Day celebrations.

"The school ensured that their children and young people had a brilliant day celebrating our national bard and the catering services team had a delicious Burns supper ready for their lunch.

"This is the first catering services theme day for 2023 with the children and young people enjoying locally sourced haggis, neeps and tatties.

"There are lots of fun days coming up where the children and young people can enjoy dressing up and also a healthy, nutritious school lunch.

"After this very successful visit, Super Tattie will be touring more primary schools and encouraging our children and young people to enjoy a healthy and nutritious school meal."
