THE Ayrshire District U17 netball squad got their 2023 fixtures off to a flier on Sunday with a superb 87-6 win at home to their Dumfries and Galloway counterparts.

A large squad of 12 players was named for the fixture, with the coaches hoping to get everyone on court at some point.

The team got off to a great start, winning the first quarter 18-2, and upped the pace in an outstanding second quarter, winning it 31-2 to go into the half-time huddle with a 49-4 advantage.

The Ayrshire team’s domination continued in the second half of the match, with a 70-6 lead at the end of the third quarter turning into an advantage of more than 80 points when the final whistle blew.

Player of the match was Kayleigh Campbell, while the awards for players’ player of the match and coaches’ player of the match both went to Kate Wylie.

A spokesperson for the coaching team said: “With respect to D&G I don’t think the score line fully reflected the game and it certainly felt tougher than the scoreline at the end.

“I was really pleased with the relentless effort from the team. The through court attack, timing and movement onto ball was great along with picking up lose ball and intercepts.

“A few areas to tidy up on which we will work on. Great to get all 12 out on court. Well done team!”
