Part of a road which was the scene of a crash at the weekend hadn't been gritted in over a week, according to East Ayrshire Council.

Emergency services were called to a multiple vehicle incident on Cairn Road on Saturday, December 17.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, but it left drivers wondering why the road hadn't been gritted prior to the incident.

Freezing temperatures in the days leading up to Saturday meant that roads, pavements and walkways were even more hazardous than usual.

The crew at Cumnock Community Fire Station posted a photograph of the road covered in black ice, making sure nobody else tried to access the road.

One resident said: "The road was a death trap.

"You wouldn't even need to be driving that fast for something to happen.

"I think everyone is lucky that something more serious didn't come of this".

The road was gritted by road workers shortly after the incident, after it being reported to the council.

However, East Ayrshire Council confirmed to the Chronicle that part of the road hadn't been gritted in over a week before the incident.

An East Ayrshire Council spokesperson, on behalf of Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: "The Ayrshire Roads Alliance treats local roads on a priority basis, which is set out in the winter service plan.

"During very cold or extreme weather P1 routes have to take precedence for treatment. P1 routes include main roads, school routes, bus routes, hospitals and access for the emergency services.

"Cairn Road, Cumnock forms part of a P1 route, which was treated at 2000hrs on 16 December and again at 0400hrs on 17 December.

"Cairn Brae is part of a P3 route, which was treated on 9 December at 0800hrs.

"There is a grit bin located on Cairn Brae for use by the local community.

"Drivers should never assume a road is ice free even if gritted as the action of salt requires traffic and is less effective in severe low temps.

"Motorists should drive to the appropriate conditions.
