Support is being offered to those who are ‘shivering in silence’ as temperatures fall and the cost of living bites.

Many local residents are struggling to cope with soaring energy bills, sparking fears their health will be at risk if they can’t afford to heat their home.

According to Advice Direct Scotland, the financial pressures of Christmas are adding to the problem.

However, the charity has stressed that help is on offer from a number of sources.

A spokesperson said: “Many people who were managing previously now find themselves in difficult situations. It is an incredibly challenging time and the festive period will only add to the pressure as people are expected to spend money on gifts and food.

“We also know that this is likely to exacerbate existing debt problems or create new ones for those who have never found themselves in debt before.

“Help is available and it is important for people to know they do not have to suffer alone.”
