The temptation when going for a break in the autumn is always to go chasing the sun.

But what’s often forgotten is what we have on offer here in the UK – with some spectacular ‘staycations’ all within driving distance.

Yes, this doesn’t offer the same topping up of your tan that you can do in mainland Europe, but it does provide plenty other opportunities for us travelling tourists.

This is exactly what I was reminded of on my trip to Beech Hill Hotel and Spa in the Lake District, close to the edge of the stunning Lake Windermere.

A four-hour drive from Ayrshire transported me to a serene and tranquil setting, far away from the hustle and bustle of working life – and with no stress of pre-airport packing, planning, checking of documents.

Just get a bag ready, hop in the car and go.

Of course, if you’re sacrificing the sun, your ‘staycation’ accommodation must deliver – and deliver it did.

From the moment you step in the door at Beech Hill, you feel like you’re the staff’s only priority.

Once you’ve booked in for dinner, breakfast and to their rather impressive spa, all you have to do is take yourself to your room – and the moment you step inside their comfortable, stylish and perfectly equipped rooms, you know you are in for a relaxing time.

Glass pane patio doors took us outside to some stunning panoramic views of one of Britain’s most picturesque settings.

And only a couple of floors below was, for me, the highlight of the hotel.

The spa facilities were second to none – with an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room and a pair of outdoor hot tubs.

From here, you can escape from the frosty winter air and relax in the heat, enjoying the same views you could from your room in an even more glorious and relaxing setting.

The two-hour slot sounded excessive, but ended feeling almost too short, and despite other guests having use of the facility, it felt far from overcrowded - and was as personal an experience as it was relaxing.

Then whether you choose to relax in your own company in your room, or indulge in a few drinks from the bar, you will be treated to a relaxing evening which encompasses everything Beech Hill stands for.

After a stressful 2022, my Lake District trip was a much-needed and relaxing escape from reality, moving all the worries of day-to-day to one side.

There was no fuss to get there, nor on arrival, or at any point in my stay – and for someone who usually enjoys basking in the sun, I would honestly say I did not miss it.

As for the facilities, I’ve stayed in my fair share of hotels both home and away, and the facilities at Beech Hill best anything I have ever experienced.

I’m guessing it won’t be long before I’m planning my return.
