The handover of the new Netherthird Primary School is set to be delayed until 2023.

Work on the year-long project started last September, with pupils initially set to move into the new school from October 27.

However, that date was pushed back due to a utility connection issue.

The official handover of the school from contractors Keir Construction to East Ayrshie Council was then due to take place tomorrow (Friday, November 4).

Now it can be revealed that date has also been rescheduled until after the New Year.

A statutory building issue has meant that alterations on part of completed works now need to be carried out.

East Ayrshire Council has said that plans are in place to keep pupils at Greenmill Primary School until after Christmas.

A council representative said: "East Ayrshire Council can confirm that the expected handover of the new Netherthird Primary School will not take place on Friday 4 November.

"Since parents and carers were notified of the revised handover date, the main contractor has had further difficulty with statutory building compliance, that is likely to require some late alterations to previously completed works.

"The council has tried to assist in addressing this; however, it is clear it will cause a further delay to the contractor handing over the building.

"Until the extent of the alterations are agreed, the main contractor is unable to confirm a revised handover date.

"However, it is anticipated that the handover will now be delayed until early 2023.

"The delivery team is therefore planning for children and young people to remain at Greenmill Primary School until the Christmas break.

"The council is working closely with the main contractor to ensure that they complete all necessary works as a matter of urgency and the new school is delivered as soon as possible.

"Colleagues from across the council will continue to support the school, ensuring that the existing transport arrangements are retained and new plans are put in place for the safer streets initiative."
