East Ayrshire Council currently has a block of 27 flats for sale in Catrine.
The flats, listed on Rightmove on behalf of Property Matters, Kilmarnock, are located on the village's St Cuthbert's Street.
Residents were believed to be moved out of the buildings due to their condition, with many saying that the flats were ridden with damp.
Council bosses say that all residents who once lived in the flats have now been rehomed.
The block is made up of a mixture of one and two bedroom flats.
While locals would like to see the historic buildings preserved, there is an admittance that the condition of the building may be beyond repair.
One resident said on social media: "The houses are full of damp and they are old and crumbling.
"I lived in one when I was young and it was always damp.
"My gran lived in one that was renovated but it still smelled of damp.
"They should be pulled down and have a wee visitor centre built".
Another said: "I really do hope someone can see beyond any problems and reinstate the building to it's former glory and keep it's heritage place in Catrine."
East Ayrshire Council have said that if a buyer is not found for a the building, then they will revert back to cabinet to find a longer term solution.
A spokesperson said: "East Ayrshire Council can confirm that the homes currently for sale on St Cuthbert's Street, Catrine are being sold on behalf of the Council.
"The decision to market this housing stock for disposal was agreed by Cabinet following a consultation with the local community in 2018.
"The most recent update to Cabinet in November 2021, confirmed that all council tenants had been successfully rehoused and that four formerly privately owned flats had been bought back.
"This meant the Council was in a position to sell the properties as agreed.
"There has been interest shown in the properties since they were advertised for sale, however if a buyer is not identified, the Council will revert to Cabinet with a progress report for further determination."
