A DRIVER admitted going too fast and telling police there was ‘no point in lying’ after getting stopped by the cops for speeding while already disqualified.

John Drummond, 32, pleaded guilty to charges of speeding, driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Not guilty pleas to driving the vehicle without consent and initially failing to stop for the cops were accepted by prosecutors.

When he appeared before Ayr Sheriff Court last week [Tuesday, September 20] Procurator Fiscal depute Chris Munro said: “At 7.10pm on the date in question police were carrying out speed checks at Ayr Road, Cumnock. An Astra was seen coming towards them. The vehicle was recorded at 50mph.”

“He was subsequently arrested and he was cautioned and charged. On route to Kilmarnock police office he did make admissions to police.

He said: “There’s no point in lying, I may as well just admit I was driving. It was stupid, I know the car was going too fast.

Defence solicitor Tony Currie said: “He is 32-years-old the record before you is not insignificant, and setting into a long term relationship.

“You can take from the quote from police he immediately realised the significance of his error.”

Sheriff Siobhan Connelly said: “Driving while disqualified is always taken seriously particularly when driving without due care and attention.

“I am prepared to deal with this in non custodial sentence.”

Drummond, of Elizabeth Crescent, Cumnock, was given a community payback order with supervision for 12 months and will have to complete 150 hours of unpaid work. He will also be disqualified for 27 months.
