Groups throughout Cumnock celebrated Learning Disability Awareness Week by taking part in a series of fun events.

The week, running from June 20-26, aims to highlight how those living with a disability can still learn, have fun and connect with others around the world.

A mixture of sports, games, singing and walking made up the many events that were held across East Ayrshire to mark Learning Disability Awareness Week.

Now in its eighteenth year, the week’s events included a Tea in the Park event and all ability sports day in Cumnock, in which Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise (CJCE) participated.

The Things Tae Dae community group in Cumnock, which works with adults in the area who have learning disabilities, had a great week, full of walks, games and activities.

Councillor Jim McMahon, cabinet member for social care and mental wellbeing, said: “Learning Disability Awareness Week is a chance for people with learning disabilities in our communities to really shine.

“It allows them to share their skills, talents and attributes and it’s fantastic to hear how much they’ve enjoyed this week’s events.

"The week has also highlighted all of the excellent work that goes on across East Ayrshire and between partner agencies to help people with learning disabilities.”

A CJCE spokesperson said: “We have been delighted to support East Ayrshire’s Learning Disability Awareness Week.

“We even had elderly residents from a care home pop down for a shot on our bikes.”
