Cumnock has a Scottish Cup winning football team in its ranks once again.

The Townhead Strollers over-60s team recently claimed the silverware in the ‘walking football’ version of the tournament at the Glasgow Green Football Centre.

Nearly 600 players took part in the event – one of the largest walking football tournaments in the world – and it was almost a Cumnock double after the Strollers’ over-50s came within a minute of reaching the final.

The over 60s topped their qualifying group, unbeaten in seven games, then advanced through knockout stages to win the trophy after beating Alloa Athletic in the final.

Two of this extraordinary team are in their 70s.

Elsewhere, the Townhead over 50s reached their semi-final and were winning 1-0 with a minute to go before a cruel deflection gave opponents Pollok an equaliser, with the Glasgow club going on to win the penalty shoot-out and then the final.

It was a great achievement from both teams, and something both can be extremely proud of.

A Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise spokesperson told the Chronicle: “Our weekly sessions are fun, great for fitness, and played in a really friendly manner.

“The new friendships made and old ones renewed are priceless. The social impact is so precious that its value cannot be determined.

“In 2022 we have two competition teams, at over 50 and over 60s. These teams play in monthly leagues in Glasgow and enter into other tournaments.

“We are all so proud of everyone in the squad – Billy Bentley, Jim Marshall, David Howie, Barry Cowton, John Logan, Matt Davey, Sam McFarlane, Gordon Hyslop and Chris Fleming.

“Our Scottish Cup win is dedicated to one of our regular footballers, Kenny Riddell, who has been ill recently. Get well soon Kenny from all the boys.

“It was a great achievement for all our walking footballers.”
