The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms today, June 8, in East Ayrshire.

This came into effect at around 1pm, and will remain in place until approximately 8pm.

The warning stretches across almost the whole of the county, from Kilmarnock, through Mauchline and down to Sanquhar and Kirkconnel.

Elsewhere in Ayrshire, Girvan and areas particularly close to the coast are expected to avoid the worst of the storms.

Cumnock Chronicle:

The Met office say that during this time:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

The Met office also have guidance available for what to do if you are travelling during these times, and how to prepare yourself for a thunderstorm.

The storms are expected to be slow moving, and develop as the day goes on.
