Mauchline’s Christmas lights switch-on event was saved by a last minute intervention after their contractor fell through, potentially leaving them in the dark at their moment of illumination.

Amey South-West Trunk Roads came to the aid of the village ahead of the switch-on event on Sunday, December 5.

The community required urgent installation of their Christmas lights when their appointed contractor fell through at the last minute.

Cumnock Chronicle:

Amey operatives donated their time and service to get the village Christmas-ready with a starry display along the A76.

Amey also provided the village with timers to be installed in the light columns to prevent the festive LED lanterns burning 24 hours a day, reducing the community’s energy consumption.

Margaret Wallace the secretary for the Mauchline Community Association, who organised the event, said that despite the close shave with the lights, the rest of their planned festive events went down a treat.

She added: “Our annual community panto was held in Kilmarnock Supporters Club on Sunday and attended by over 200 children and adults.

“All children who attended were provided with crisps, juice and sweets from the Association.

“We are very grateful to Andy for once again providing the function hall of the Club for this community event.

Cumnock Chronicle:

“All who attended have said they will be back next year and we appreciate their support.

“Following the community panto the Christmas lights and tree at Centre Stane were switched on by Ms Dougan head teacher Mauchline PS and two pupil assistants.

“This was followed by carol singing led by Mauchline Brownies and Guides with support from the community who had gathered at The Cross for the switch on.

“The next Christmas event on Monday is also a sell out when children will meet Santa and have the opportunity to meet his reindeer at Centre Stane.”
