A road in an East Ayrshire village has been closed as an emergency safety measure - and it will remain shut for more than a month.

Mill of Shield Road in Drongan was shut on Friday, November 12 and is not expected to reopen until shortly before Christmas.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) has cited "the likelihood of danger to the public and serious damage to the road" and stated the road has been closed because of "insufficient width to allow the passage of larger vehicles to get through the works".

An ARA notice published on East Ayrshire Council's website says the work is due to last until December 24, though a spokesperson said the current work permits are valid until December 17.

The spokesperson said: "The Ayrshire Roads Alliance can confirm that the emergency road closure on Mill of Shield Road was required for safety reasons.

"There was insufficient width to allow the passage of larger vehicles to get through the works without overrunning the footway.

"The current road work permits are valid until Friday 17 December."

Diverted traffic should proceed via Littlemill Road, Barbieston Avenue, Mainsford Avenue, Carston Drive and vice versa.
