Barshare Primary School, once located on Dalgleish Avenue in Cumnock, has been reduced to rubble and dust following demolition works which got underway at the site in the last few weeks.

Barshare closed last year after pupils joined thousands of others in the new multimillion pound super school, Barony Campus, which officially opened in late 2020.

At the time, the school joined Greenmill PS in bidding an emotional farewell to the premises as they made their transition to Lochnorris Primary which is situated in the state-of-the-art facility - the largest of its kind in Scotland.

Despite alumni having already packed up their belongings and made the move, ex-students and nostalgic parents alike rushed to share their memories of Barshare when it came down, lamenting its demise and saying they were “sorry to see it go”.

Social media users were also shocked to see photos of the demolition which saw debris dumped on the old playground and classrooms exposed to the elements.

One user commented: “Devastated. I attended, as did my sister and my own two weans. Best wee school ever, best teachers, best everything. Should never have been shut.”

Another said: “My son went to the SLC here what a difference they made to him and his life...brilliant school sad to see it go.”

One woman agreed, saying: “Very sad, best wee school. Loved it.”

People in the area were also eager to mention their past teachers who they credited for making the school what it was – and having an impact on their lives.

One person said: “I was there in the early 80s had Mrs Dankes I still remember her, best teacher I ever had”, while another commented, “My daughter attended SLC here and what a great school and staff especially Mrs Hastings and Miss Robertson”.

Speaking last year, Cindy O’Driscoll, Head Teacher of Lochnorris Primary, said: “Last week, we said goodbye to Barshare and Greenmill Primary Schools and will celebrate the legacy of the schools with both communities as soon as we are able to do so safely.

“The facilities within the new Campus are exceptional and are going to provide wonderful learning opportunities for our young people.”
