Catrine Amateurs FC’s annual pre season tournament kicked off this weekend in tribute to two very special local men who helped make the club what it is today.

The Campbell/Boyle Cup is named after Jocky Campbell, who sadly passed away a few years ago, and Thompson Boyle, both of whom are described as “a big part of why the club started again in 2014”.

The hard fought game on Saturday against Glens ended in a 2-2 draw, which was good going considering the sizzling temperatures which was sure to have made the match a bit more challenging.

Sunday’s game featured Mauchline AFC vs Talbot U19s and resulted in a 1-0 triumph during penalties to Mauchline. Unfortunately, the game had to be stopped due to a Mauchline player being injured. All at Catrine AFC wish the Mauchline player a speedy recovery.

Speaking beforehand about the club legends that inspired the Cup name, committee member Robert Mackenzie said: “Jockey used to play with Catrine years and years ago, back in the 60s and 70s. He probably finished up in the 70s but he died a few years ago.

“The club was founded in 2014 but there was a Catrine Amateurs before that but they folded and couldn’t continue for whatever reason so a couple of local men from Catrine, Jocky and Thompson Boyle in the pub said to them, here’s £100, go start Catrine Amateurs football team again.

“One thing led to another and those people are away from the club now, they didn’t want to continue, but me and another group of boys have taken it over.

“It was us that founded the trophy tournament and we said, we’ll get the tournament going in the name of Thompson and Jocky.”

He continued: “We’re playing four teams over a few days and the last game is Wednesday, July 28. It was hard going after COVID but we’re getting there now. We have a few players signed and a few sponsors behind us so we’re trying to get back to normality on the footy side.”
