The minister for Auchinleck and Catrine has completed most of the River Ayr walk in just one day to raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of both churches.

Last week, we reported on how Steve Clipston was aiming to walk 44 miles of the River Ayr Way to boost funds for the churches which have suffered financially due to COVID.

He set off on Monday, June 21 and although joined by kind locals who were there to provide some moral support, blisters, exhaustion and hunger got the better of him, and in the end he was unable to complete the last four and a half miles towards Ayr.

Steve is now hoping to finish the full trek sometime in the near future - but says that donations so far are much appreciated.

Cumnock Chronicle:

He said: “Had a good warm up at 2.45am from Glenbuck to Muirkirk with torches. Appreciated the company of Marla, Anne and Aaron. From there on my own a mostly pleasant walk to Sorn – but really felt my legs after those

energy sapping inclines.

“Great to have the encouragement of Lynette and Elaine who accompanied me to Catrine, especially for that uphill part out of Sorn. Then joined by P6/7 from Catrine PS – a real pleasure for their company out of Catrine. From there I was on my own.”

He continued: “By the time I got to Annbank I was tempted to call it a day, but after a rest and more water from the shop, I set off again on the long loop to the bridge just a short distance down the road from the shop.

Cumnock Chronicle:

“Greeted by a herd of cows as I got to the Auchincruive Road, I sadly realised I couldn’t manage the last four and a half miles into Ayr.

“Very gutted and disappointed that I had to give up, but it was the sensible option in the circumstances – exhausted and light-headed – not to mention the five blisters. Will I attempt it again? Maybe, but not today.”
