People living in Ayrshire and Arran are being reminded to follow the guidelines on social gatherings to help stop the spread of coronavirus in their communities.

The message comes at the start of the Euro 2020 campaign, which will bring some much-needed light relief to many people across Ayrshire.

However, as well as following the Scottish Government guidance on social gatherings, residents are being urged to take regular COVID-19 tests, especially before meeting with friends and family or attending public events.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran Director of Public Health Lynne McNiven, said: “While we want people to enjoy themselves, was also need them to stay safe. More people will get together to watch the games – whether in pubs, household gatherings or even during visits to the Fan Zones or matches. We need them to stay safe and avoid spreading the virus.

"Remember to follow the FACTS, regardless of where you are. If any one of us breaches this guidance, there is a significant risk that we could make our family, friends and other close contacts unwell. We also risk helping to set back the date for the further easing of restrictions. We also don’t want to see local restrictions tightening again and we all have a role to play in that."

Scotland National Team make their official debut at this year's tournament today [June 14] at 2pm when they take on Czech Republic, and then again against old rivals, England, on Friday [June 18].

Under current level two restrictions, people can meet socially in groups of up to six people from three households in homes and indoor public place like a café, pub or restaurant.

Eight people from eight households can meet outdoors. Under 12s do not count towards the total number of people or households meeting outside, but do count towards household numbers indoors.

Ms McNiven added: “Testing helps us to identify more cases of the virus and give us all a better chance of stopping it from spreading. So, get tested regularly, even if you have been vaccinated. Lateral Flow Test kits, which should be taken twice a week, are freely available across Ayrshire. Visit https://www.nhsaaa.net/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/ to find out more.

“The vaccine provides our best way out of the coronavirus pandemic and a return, in time, to the things we’ve all missed. So, make sure you get the vaccine when it is offered to you. It is the most important thing you will do this year.”
