Glenafton Amateurs Football Club did more than their fair share for charity last Saturday after organising an “Old Firm” charity match in aid of two cancer charities, the Beatson and Sarcoma UK.
A fantastic day was had by all those who took part in the event, which was held at Greenhead Park on May 22 to raise cash for the Beatson and Sarcoma UK.
A squad of residents donned either a Celtic or Rangers strip to have a good-natured kick about for the two causes – helping to raise more than £2,000.
Those who do not want to know the result may not want to read on – but it was the “Rangers” team who came out on top on the day, although a great effort was put in by all the footballers.
In a post on social media, Glenafton described the event and the total sum raised as “incredible”, saying: “There’s honestly no words to describe how much this means.
“Thank you to everyone who donated, took part in the game and supported the club at the ground.”
Players on both sides also received medals when the final whistle blew to thank them for their contribution and admirable sporting skills on the day.
The club also gave a special thanks to Thomas O’Kane for sponsoring the game, DS Wetwall & Bathrooms, who provided the match ball, the club volunteers who kept everyone fed and refreshed, other volunteers who helped out with raffle tickets, the runners from Monday night, DJ Scotty T for supplying the tunes, and everyone who donated raffles and prizes.
A shout out was given to every player who took part in the game and, quite literally, put their best foot forward and to “every single person who contributed in raising so much”.
