Running from May 10-16, Mental Health Awareness Week is an event held annually to promote conversation about the subject.

The event is hosted by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) and was first held 21 years ago.

In a year where many have relied on the outdoors for leisure and enjoyment, the MHF has selected nature as the theme.

Across Ayrshire and beyond, there are a number of charities and organisations offering support to those struggling with their mental health.

Here are some of the services available:

Three Sixty

Three Sixty, formerly known as Ayr Action for Mental Health, aims to help those suffering from mental health issues to come full circle.

The charity focuses on conversation and connections which help people turn their lives around.

The organisation was formed in 1987 and is based at Strathyre House in Ayr.

Three Sixty has increased its number of online sessions on offer during the pandemic, as well as running a wellbeing calls service.

The charity usually also offers creative workshops, member meetings, walking groups and guitar lessons.

The Kris Boyd Charity

Set up by the former Kilmarnock forward, The Kris Boyd Charity was established to support people struggling with mental health issues.

The charity aims to help link these people up with services which can provide them with assistance.

In the past, the organisation has run a range of ‘Calm Your Mind’ workshops, delivered talks in over 25 schools and built a working relationship with Ayrshire College.

The charity’s website has links to podcasts and recordings of mental health coaching sessions, and features a form allowing people to contact a mental health specialist.

RAMH

Recovery Across Mental Health (RAMH) offers mental health support services across a number of areas in Scotland, including North and South Ayrshire.

The charity offers support and provides professional care for those dealing with mental health issues such as depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety.

RAMH also runs a REstore charity shop which upcycles and sells donated items, with all profits being invested back into mental health services.

The charity also owns and provides low-cost access to a residential caravan at Craig Tara Holiday Park.

Breathing Space

Available nationwide, Breathing Space offers a free, confidential helpline for over 16s in Scotland.

Funded by the Scottish Government, the helpline is run by NHS24 contact centres in South Queensferry, Clydebank and Cardonald.

Breathing Space advisors come from mental health and social work backgrounds, co-operating with other established mental health agencies to provide callers with the support they need.

The helpline is available on 0800 83 85 87 from 6pm-2am Monday to Thursday, and 6pm-6am Friday to Monday.
