It is the day we have all been waiting for - the opportunity to shake off the lockdown cobwebs, get back out on the road and explore all our beautiful country has to offer.

But for many of us here in Cumnock and surrounding areas, there is no need to go too far afield to enjoy a picnic at a beauty spot, a leisurely walk with the dog or a family hillwalk.

Indeed many of these are right on our doorstep. So whether you're reclaiming the walking boots, itching to take in some spectacular views or simply wanting a run in the car, we have put together a list of eight beauty spots nearby for you to soak up this weekend.

In perhaps what is becoming the most Instagrammable spot for hillwalkers in the area, Cairn Table is a great way to start your first Saturday morning out of lockdown. Start at the car park adjacent to the Kames Institute and read the information board which gives the route. The walk is relatively straightforward and isn't too testing for first-time trekkers, with mainly grassy footpaths and a completion time of around two and a half hours. If the weather isn't great, prepare for some boggy parts, but if the sun is shining, enjoy catching glimpses of Isle of Arran and Ben Lomond in the distance.

Wallace's Cave, Auchinleck

Situated on the Auchinleck Estate and close to the Deer House and the ruins of Auchinleck Castle, Wallace's Cave is a great place to visit for young explorers and historically-minded ramblers. The cave can be reached via a narrow path and follows the River Lugar gorge. With greenery to wade through, a rolling burn and steps to take you to the cave as it is somewhat cut into the side of a cliff, take in the beauty around you while embarking on a mini adventure. Just watch your footing!

Loch Doon, Dalmellington

We couldn't possibly collate a list of beauty spots and not mention Loch Doon. Notorious for its illuminating hills and sparkling water, Loch Doon is one of the most beautiful spots in the whole of Ayrshire. Park considerately in the car park which is located next to the road signed A713 to Castle Douglas and Dumfries and do a lap of the Loch, head for the Castle or take the bike for a spin. Pop into The Roundhouse Cafe for a coffee and a bite to eat on the way back. What more could you ask for?

Catrine/Sorn circular

Although more of a walk than a beauty spot in itself, Catrine and Sorn circular will still provide you with some eye-catching scenery as you take the 6.8km loop trail from one village to another in a jaunt which has been described as 'magical' by some locals. Walking along the River Ayr, this route is again good for all skill levels. Take in Catrine Voes in the sunshine and bask in the great outdoors.

Afton Dam, New Cumnock

Again, an old faithful in terms of local beauty spots, but Afton Dam is well worth a visit. A great day out is sure to be had doing the circular Dam walk and although it will certainly get the step count up, the walk will reward you with breathtaking sights as you reach more level footing and look down towards the glen. Linger in one place or do the full circular route with friends which will take around one hour and 20 minutes. Start from Glenafton Reservoir which can be reached by taking the B741, Dalmellington Road out of New Cumnock. Please behave responsibly near the Dam.

Dumfries House Estate, Cumnock

Whether you're an early riser or a night owl, Dumfries House Estate is a charming spot to take in sunset or sunrise. With so many nice, easy walks and lots of wildlife to spot buzzing in the bushes or flying overhead, the grounds are a feast for the eyes and the ears. With four hundred thousand daffodils now welcoming you in, planted at either side of the two long stretches of path on either side of The Temple, kids can frolick away until their heart's content in the knowledge that spring has truly sprung on the Estate.

Mauchline Hill Top, Mauchline

Head to the village of Mauchline to get above the clouds and cast your eye over rolling green fields, and see if you can spot your house from those dotted below. On an exceptionally clear day, not only can the Isle of Arran be viewed, but so can the Irish Coastline. So give our Irish counterparts a wave, or take in one of the many other vantage points, and then pick up a refreshment from The Mossgiel Snug on your way back. Remember to support local while enjoying these beauty spots!

Crawick Multiverse, Sanquhar

A spectacular visit, Crawick Multiverse is a land art for lovers of cosmology and science. Even if you just want to take your dog for a walk and absorb some luscious landscapes in the process, look no further, because this is the spot for you. Take in amazing landforms and 360 views of the site and the Upper Nithsdale Valley from the Northpoint or try to keep your balance while navigating spiralling paths. There is even a chance to peek inside some exciting caves, making this a day out to remember.
