Nithsdale Wanderers Ladies football team are encouraging women to get involved in their newly-formed club.

Nithsdale Wanderers Ladies was started in October 2020 by Bobbie Moore, daughter of ex-Wanderers player and manager Bobby Moore, and friend Meghan Davies after a few get-togethers with local women generated real interest in keeping fit and pursuing football at league level.

The team have since successfully joined the SWF-South West league which was due to start in March. COVID-19 restrictions means the season was rendered null and void, but there is hope that they may still get a few games at least between themselves in the coming months.

The team may also benefit efforts to have a 3G Park installed on the site of the Sanquhar Academy Fields.

Cumnock Chronicle:

Bobbie explained: “In November we met up to do some drills and have a mess around and the girls were saying it was something they’d like to do properly. We put a post up on Facebook about it and got around 40 people coming back to us as far as Cumnock and Dumfries saying they’d be up for it so it spiralled from there.

“Meghan and I then managed to get my dad on board to help with the coaching side of things. We only managed two training sessions before restrictions but at the minute we’ve got over 30 girls interested and we’re looking to get back to no-contact training.

“We’re reaching out to people who have played in football teams before and who are used to intense training and playing matches. There will then be a main team and another one for people who just want to come and train for the fitness side.

“The men and kids teams have someone who trains the goalies so we’ll have access to that as well as their equipment, dressing rooms and other facilities. ”
